I love the thought of decorating pew candles and those type of candle decorations are usually designed on a floral foam cage. They come with a handle with a pre-punched hole for easy wiring. Single candle aisle stands can usually be found through a wedding rental company. They usually clamp directly to the pew to prevent tipping, although some models are free standing. I strongly suggest you rent ones with a glass chimney of some kind. Open candles are not a good idea when guests are moving in and out of the pews. Turkey Glow Birds

I found this fun candle craft for your children to create for Thanksgiving, its the Turkey Glow Birds. Create a flock of these bright votive holders (Disney Family Fun, 2011)! Either fill the inside with battery-operated tea lights or unscented tea lights to add luminous addition to your table. Learn how to create your own Turkey Glow Birds!

Materials:
Hot glue
Glue gun
1 1/4-inch wooden doll head (available at craft stores)
Small glass bubble votive holder (ours is 4 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches high)
Brush
Mod Podge
Tissue paper
Scissors
Tacky glue
Beads

Instructions
Apply a dab of hot glue from a glue gun to the wooden doll head. Then adhere the head to the votive holder.

Brush Mod Podge over the head and body, then cover them with overlapping tissue paper scraps. Apply another Mod Podge layer and let it dry for at least 45 minutes.

To make the tail feathers, cut 9- by 2-inch strips of tissue paper, bend each in half without creasing it, then twist the ends together. Use a dollop of tacky glue to attach each feather to the body.

Cut a beak from a double layer of yellow tissue and affix it with tacky glue. Add two beads for eyes. Cut a long oval of red tissue, twist one end, and affix it as a wattle. Allow the turkey to dry.

DIY Luminaries

A great party always needs to have indoors or outdoor lighting because it sets the ambiance for the party. I recently stumbled across an inexpensive way of creating our own indoor and outdoor lighting with these luminaries! This craft is super easy to make and you can purchase most of the items from Michaels, AC Moore, or Joann Fabrics. Read below to learn how to make your own luminaries for your event.

Materials and Tools:
1. white paper bags (3.5” x 6.5” we found these , paper bags online on amazon)
2. bone folder
3. pencil
4. stencils and/or stamps and white stamp pad
5. x-acto knife
6. small piece of cardboard
7. 22 gauge wire, cut in to 17” segments
8. grommets and grommet pliers
10. tea lights
11. long matches or long lighter

Instructions:
1. fold over about 1” of the top of the bag. this was a little tricky but after ripping a few, we got the hang of it. start slowly, moving in a circular motion and going little by little. when you have the entire 1” folded over, pull out the gussets on both sides and use the bold folder to make the top that you folded over a clean fold.

2. slide the small piece of cardboard in the flat bag, so you have a surface to cut on without cutting through the other side of the bag.

3. using a pencil, trace your stencils and use an x-acto knife to slowly cut out the design. (or, we used our rubber stamp collection to stamp on the bags in white, let dry and cut around the stamp. this way if you are not exact in your cutting, the white ink blends with the bag, leaving room for a few mistakes!)

4. on the middle side of each bag put a grommet about 1/2” down from the top.

5. use the cut wire to form a “handle” by looping it through each grommet and twisting it up to secure on both sides.

6. put a tea light in each bag and hang on a porch, deck or even inside a dining room. light each tea light using a very long match or lighter.

Perfectly Pine Cones Centerpieces

I love sharing beautiful centerpieces and decorations. Even if this it is made for the fall time, I still love it! Read below on the items you need to get started to create your own pine cone centerpiece.

Materials and Tools:
-Several clear glass cylinders
-Satin Ribbon
-Double-sided transparent tape
-Several small and large pine cones
-Several sweetgum balls cut in half
-Pillar candles
-Hot glue gun

Instructions:
Use several of the clear glass cylinders to arrange down the center of the table. Cut a length of wide of satin ribbon to fit around each cylinder, which will allow the ribbon ends. Secure the ribbon ends with double-sided transparent tape. Then create the pine cone ornament by first cutting several sweet gum balls in half using scissors. Remove the largest scales from a soft, open pinecone. Hot-glue pine cone scales on back of each sweetgum ball, starting in the middle and working your way out, making a snowflake shape. Use hot glue to attach the pinecone ornament to ribbon where the ends meet. Place a pillar candle in the middle of cylinder, and surround it with miniature pinecones.

DIY Floral Paper Luminaries

I am always looking for diy candle projects for home decor,weddings, or events and I stumbled along this project that I had to share with my readers! Transform plain luminaries to elegant floral luminaries! Here are the instructions and visuals on how to create your own for your home or event (Morning Artist, 2011).

Materials:
-Plain paper lantern (battery operated, for portability)
-Colored tissue paper (used ones will do)
-Round disk template (I used a CD cover)
-Scissors
-Permanent double sided tape (or glue gun if you prefer).
I like the tape, less messy and safe for little fingers (for little ones)

Instructions:
Step 1:
Using your round disk template, trace and cut circles from the paper tissues.
Short-cut Tip:
Fold the papers together for multiple cut-outs.

Step 2:
Fold each circle in half then glue or tape the middle in the paper lantern randomly.

Step 3:
Keep going until all circles are folded and taped/ glued to the lantern.

Step 4:
Turn it on (make sure your batteries are new) and admire your luminary.

*1 16-inch ventilated pizza pan
*4 39-inch lengths of light chain
*1 Foot of aluminum wire
*2 S-Hooks

Instructions:
The pan will hang from three of the chains, so space them evenly around your circle. Wire them on by looping two-inch pieces of wire through adjoining holes in the pan. Pull the chains together at the top with an S-hook. Attach it to your fourth chain; suspend that from the other hook. Arrange with moss and votives (GH, 2011).

Full In Bloom Instructions by Martha Stewart (Stewart, M. 2011):
Print clip art onto standard-weight 11-by-17-inch paper (if your printer does not handle this size, copy the clip art onto a disc or thumb drive, and take it to a copy shop or office-supply store with a printing department).

Cut the templates to fit various heights of square candleholders or vases (to shorten the wrapper, cut away excess from bottom by the stem). Wrap around candleholders, and secure with double-sided tape. To finish the bottoms, wrap green grosgrain ribbon around the candleholder, and secure with double- sided tape.

7 Simple Steps for Lacy Votives

I love all things for candle decor, whether it be for the home or for events. I found this beautiful candle craft on the Wedding Bee! Use these 7 Simple Steps to create your own Lacy Votives!

Tools and Materials:
-Lace
-Ivory Vellum Paper
-Satin Ribbon
-Double Sided Scotch Tape
-Votive Candle Holder
-Scissors

Instructions:
This is kind of a quick and simple way to make lacy votives without having to use a sewing machine.

1. Measure the length around a tea votive holder and cut vellum paper and lace a few inches longer than the length of the votive.
2. Apply several pieces of double sided paper on vellum paper.
3. Adhere lace to the vellum paper and make sure that the edges of the lace are secure to the paper.
4. If your lace has a scalloped edge, trim the edges throughout the full length.
5. Roll the lacy vellum paper around votive holder. You can either roll the paper with the lace facing inside or outside candle holder.
6. Overlap and adhere ends with several pieces of double sided tape.
7. Wrap satin ribbon around votive and add bowtie bow to each using tape.

Tools:
-Buckets
-Water

Instructions:
1. Take 2 buckets one smaller than the other.
2. Fill the bigger one with 1/2 water and then place the smaller one inside it and weigh it down so it stays there (add rocks or something).
3. Add more water to the top of the 2nd bucket.
4. Add some olive branches.
5. Use tape to hold the 2nd bucket in the middle of the big bucket and set outside to freeze.
6. Once frozen remove small bucket and then the large one. Now you have an ice lantern.
7. Add votive candle inside.

Light Up Your Event Space with Chantilly Lace

Materials needed:
-Fabric Scissors

-Hot Glue Gun
-Fabric Stiffener
-Brush

Instructions:
To determine how much lace you'll need for each, measure height and circumference of vase. Before cutting, brush lace with fabric stiffener (available at crafts and fabric stores) so that it won't fray; let dry. Cut, allowing 1/2 inch for seam. For the top edge, follow the floral or decorative pattern as you cut. Wrap lace around vase, and use a hot-glue gun to secure the ends (Stewart, M., 2010).

7 Simple Steps to Create Hanging Candle Votives

I am always looking for ways to decorate with candles at home or for an event. I recently came across this beautiful hanging candle votive project that a mom and daugther created together for the daugther's wedding ceremony. Here are the 7 simple steps to create hanging candle votives for your home or event.

DIY Hanging Candle Votives
Materials:
Heavy Gauge Wire, pre-greased (found at Lowe’s)
Wire Cutters
Votive Candle Holders, different sizes and shapes
Round Nose Pliers
Pencil

Instructions:
1. Depending on the size of the votive, use wire cutters and cut sections anywhere from 18-21 inches. 18″ for the smallest votives and 21″ for the medium and larger votives. You can use 21″ for all if you want, you’ll just have a little extra when you close the sides.

2. Cut your desired length of wire with a wire cutter.

3. Fold the wire in half and crimp just below the fold with round-nose pliers.

4. To form a hook, wrap crimped end over a pencil. Hold the base of the hook tightly with pliers, separate the two lengths of wire, then twist tightly around each other three times.

5. To form a loop, while still holding the wire with your pliers, take the “legs” of the wire in your other hand and twist one to two times.

6. To form the cuff that will hold the votive, use pliers to make a 90-degree bend, 4 1/4 inches from the hook base, on each length of wire. Situate the bends on opposite sides of the votive, about two-thirds of the way from the bottom of the glass.

7. Bring each cut end around to meet the opposite bend. With the tip of the pliers, make a tiny loop at each cut end. Hook the loops to the bends; use pliers to close loops tightly. Insert votive into the circle formed (Project Wedding, 2010).

* Snow

Instructions:
1. Pack snow into pans. To release, tap bottom of pan firmly. If the snow doesn't come out in 1 piece, repeat, letting the filled pan sit outside for 30 minutes to harden; then release.

2. Trim the wick of a candle to 1/4 inch, so the flame stays small. Secure candle on a flat surface, such as a step, by packing snow around it. Stack 3 snow forms over candle. Lightly spritz pillar with water; everything will freeze in place.

You only need a few materials and a little know how to get this craft done before Thanksgiving,so you can light your guests straight to your front door for a wonderful turkey dinner! Here are the materials you need:

Materials
* Scissors
* Lunch-size paper bag
* Tissue paper (white, yellow, red, and orange)
* Glue stick
* Turkey Template
* Sand or rocks
* Votive candles and Votive candle holders

Instructions

1.Turkey Luminarias - Step 1 Cut a circle from the seamless side of a lunch-size paper bag. Use the cutout circle as a guide to cut a slightly larger circle from white or yellow tissue paper.

2. Cut skinny triangles of red, orange, and yellow tissue paper for the feathers, and cut two wing shapes from red tissue paper. Use a glue stick to affix the feathers and wings onto the tissue paper circle.

3. Cut a turkey body (you can download our template) from the brown paper circle, then glue it to the center of the tissue paper collage.

4. Line the edge of the bag's circular hole with more glue, then lay the collage circle on top. Fill the bag with about an inch of sand or rocks and nestle an votive candle holder and votive candle.

Instructions:
A selection of gourds makes a great decoration on a table or mantle, but they can also be put to a dual use. By choosing a gourd with at least one flat side and carving a hole into it big enough for a candle, you can create a unique light source. For our gourd, we used tapered candles with a thickness of 7/8-inch. We decided to place the hole where the stem is and used a 13/16-inch paddle drill bit to make the hole. When you drill, don't stop when you hear the bit pierce the flesh, as it can damage the skin on the edge of the hole. Drill about 3/4-inch deep, clean out the hole, and place the candle inside (Stewart, M. 2010).

Celtic Knot Pumpkin Decor

"There are eight elementary knots which form the basis of nearly all the interlaced patterns in Celtic decorative art. Two of the elementary knots are derived from a three-cord plait, and the remaining six from a four-cord plait. Before the Christian influence on the Celts (about 450 A.D.), the only known Celtic artwork consisted of geometrical patterns such as spirals, key patterns, and step patterns. It has been suggested that the Celts' religion prevented them from depicting the works of the creator, namely animals, plants, and humans. 1. Download Celtic knot template one or two. Fit template to size of funkin by enlarging or reducing template; print. Staple Celtic knot template onto funkin.

2. Start poking tiny holes through template to form Celtic knot outline. Remove staples and take off template. Begin cutting funkin out by using a key hole saw, starting in the middle and working outwards.

* Scrap cardboard
* Glue stick

Step 1
Cut Out Shapes
Stencil letters, words, or designs onto one bag. Experiment with different bag sizes and typefaces; inspiration for script styles can be found in the art section of your local bookstore or library. (You can find some spooky creatures and letters here.) Use a photocopier with an enlarger to create stencils of any size for your lantern. Slide a piece of cardboard inside bag for a cutting surface, and cut out letters or shapes with the utility knife. Do not discard center cutouts from letters with closed shapes, such as A, D, and O.

Step 2
Glue Bags and Insert Candle
Fold the top edge of the second bag over twice. Trim top of stenciled bag so it is slightly shorter than the bag with the folded edge. Run glue stick around edges of letters inside stenciled bag. Place bag with folded edge inside stenciled bag, tucking stenciled bag's top edge under inner bag's folded top edge. Press bags together at stenciled area; hold until glue sets.

Step 3:
Gather center cutouts saved from letters with closed shapes. For each one, glue the cutout onto inner bag exactly behind the corresponding letter on outer bag, creating the illusion of a printed letter. With lights shining inside bags, an O, for instance, should look a ring instead of a big round hole. Now set up your display and light candles. Hold candle in its glass, halfway down in bag. Light wick with a lighter, and lower it carefully into bag. You can also use battery-powered or flameless candles if you choose.

Spooktacular Candle Creatures!

I was just in the grocery store noticing all the Halloween costumes and candies ready for this season and I thought I would share this Spooktacular Candle Creature Craft! To set the mood for Halloween night, use a candle and a cardboard pattern to transform a blank wall into a canvas for scary and hovering creatures (Stewart, M. 2010).

Materials
Our templates (see below), or your own
Tracing paper
Black poster board
Soft-lead pencil
Scissors or utility knife
18-gauge wire
Pillar candles
Black masking tape

Candle Creatures How-To
Select the desired images; draw them freehand, or download our templates, below. Use a photocopy machine to enlarge the image to the desired size. Place a sheet of tracing paper between the image and the poster board. Use a soft-lead pencil to trace the outline of the creature onto the board, then cut out the design with scissors or utility knife.

Wrap one end of the wire around the candle, and secure it with a twist. Using black masking tape, attach the cutout at the other end of the wire.

Place the candle in a dark location on the floor, table, or mantle, and light the wick. Move the candle around to adjust the size and placement of the shadow (the cutout should be between the candle and the wall). You may need to alter the length of the wire or change the candle's distance from the wall to achieve just the right image.

Frosted Salted Pillars

It is hard to believe that Christmas is right around the corner. However, I thought this craft could be used during the fall season or at Thanksgiving time as well. In this particular candle craft, Martha uses basic epsom salts give blue candles an icy charm and for this wintery setting, one can add pine cones and winter greenery to add the final touch to this candle centerpiece(Stewart, M. 2010). This would make a beautiful candle centerpiece for a winter wedding though. To create this craft for your home, wedding, or event, we have provided the instructions below:

* Rimmed baking sheet or tray
* Epsom salts
* Small paintbrush
* 3-by-3-inch pillar candles
* Mod Podge gloss
* Passi-flora fabric

Candle How-To
1. Fill a rimmed baking sheet or tray with Epsom salts. Coat the entire outside surface of a pillar candle with Mod Podge glue, then roll the coated candle in the salts until fully covered.

Pinecone Candle Vine

Yet another beautiful candle project by Martha Stewart. Martha states that the climbers include flowers made from Sabulosum cone scales, buds from the tamarack tree, and leaves, which are really single Norway spruce cone scales. The finished vine can be tightly coiled around a candlestick (Martha Stewart, 2010).

Vine How-To
1. To make buds and leaves for a vine, affix tamarack buds and large scales to 4-inch-long wires: Wrap floral tape around wires and bases of bud or scale, adding tacky glue where necessary.

2. Cut a piece of heavy floral wire as long as desired length of vine. Alternate florets with buds and leaves: Lay stem against the floral wire, wrap it in place with brown floral tape, lay the next against the wire, wrap it, and so on until vine is complete.

3. Add pinecone blossoms.

Blossom How-To
1. Fill a small bowl with scales. For the work surface, you'll need a cardboard box (at least 4 inches square) with a hinged lid.

2. Snip 4 inches of floral wire; form a small hook on one end. From card stock, cut a disk a bit larger than the desired size of the bloom's center. Secure disk to box top by poking wire through both, letting hook rest in the center so the wire won't fall through.

3. Using tacky glue, affix scales in a flower shape to disk; the hook will become covered with glue. For a fuller blossom, add another layer inside the first, using smaller scales, adding up to five layers for larger blooms.

4. Use tacky glue to attach one or more cloves or tiny plant parts in the center; let dry, and remove bloom from box.

Copper Leaf Bobeches

Different cultures provide their own solutions with candle wax spillage and I recently found an idea from our French friends who have created a solution for wax spillage, its named “The Bobeche” and what is special about this item is that the collar like part of the candleholder catches the candle wax spillage. In my option, the Bobeche brings its own simplistic décor to any candle, while creating a wonderful solution for wax spillage. To learn how to create your own “The Bobeche,” read our simple instructions below (MS, 2010).

“The Copper Leaf Bobeche”

Tools and Materials
Leaf-shaped metal stamp
Copper-colored aluminum foil
Wooden spindle or bone folder
Heavy scissors
Copper-foil adhesive tape
Pillar candle

Copper Leaf Bobeches How-To
1. Use the metal stamp to punch 12 leaf shapes out of copper-colored aluminum foil. Flatten the leaves so the edges don't curl under.
2. With a wooden spindle or bone folder, burnish the leaves to make gentle folds where the veins would be on a real leaf. If you want, burnish 6 on the copper side and 6 on the silver side of the aluminum.
3. On a piece of aluminum, trace around the base of the candle, then draw another ring around the first ring that's a 1/4 inch larger. With a pair of heavy scissors, cut along the outer circle and then along the inner circle. Flatten out the ring to remove any buckling and to smooth the edges.
4. Fold the stems of the leaves over the ring, and using the copper-foil adhesive tape, affix them on the underside of your ring. Repeat until you have covered the entire ring with leaves. Slide the finished ring over the candle.

Autumn Luminarias How-To:
1. Collect fallen leaves, and arrange them on top of colored-paper treat bags.
2. Put 1 teaspoon acrylic paint (choose colors that contrast with bags) in a 2- to 3-ounce misting bottle. Fill halfway with water and shake to mix. Mist bags and leaves. Let dry 20 minutes. Remove leaves. Repeat on other side. Fill bottom of each bag with sand.
3. Illuminate: For safety reasons, use either glass holders that are three times as tall as candles or substitute battery-operated lights.

Tools and Materials
Light-colored paper lunch bags in various sizes
Ruler
Scalloped rotary cutter
12-inch gold-colored doilies (white ones won't show through as well)
Utility knife
Scissors
Glue stick or Xyron sticker-making machine
Votive candles in glass holders
Utility lighter

Luminarias How-To
1. Lay each bag flat; use a ruler to guide the scalloped rotary cutter as you cut a new top edge 1 inch below the bag's original edge.

2. To cut doilies to fit the bag, lay a bag flat on the work surface. Lay a doily on the bag, and determine where to cut in order to create a pleasing design. Cut straight lines with a ruler and a utility knife; use scissors to snip along curves. The final size of the doily should be 1/8 inch narrower than the width of the bag so the doily will lay flat inside.

3. Coat the gold side of the doily generously with glue from the glue stick, or coat it with self-adhesive using the Xyron machine. Attach doily to the inside of the front of the bag, positioning it as desired. After gluing, close the bag, and run your hand firmly over the design to seal. Open the bag, and let dry at least 1 hour.

4. Set the bag in desired location, and then put the votive candle, in its holder, inside. Light the wick once the candle holder has been securely placed; do not carry the lit luminaria.

Step 5
Fold the bottom corners under; secure with tape. Curl each petal tip around a pencil; press with your fingers, and release.

Carnation Candle Centerpieces

What you need:

* 3, 12-inch floral foam wreaths
* 3 plates
* About two dozen red carnations
* One dozen red spider gerbera daisies
* Small ornaments
* 3 ivory candles
* 3 glass hurricane lamps

How to make it:

1. Soak the floral foam wreaths in water until saturated.
2. Place each form on a plate that's slightly wider than your completed project. Cut the stems of red carnations close to the base of the bud, gently pushing the short stem into the floral foam.
3. Add a dozen red spider gerbera daisies, if you'd like. Completely cover the form with flowers. The number you'll need depends on the size of the flowers (we used 24 to 30 medium-size carnations for each).
4. Buy small, pearl ornaments with wire attached to their bases and insert them into the wreath wherever you like.
5. Place an ivory candle and glass hurricane lamp in the center of the wreath(BHG, 2010).

Instructions:
1. Download the free pattern for this project-You have to sign up for an account as well to BHG. (Downloading requires Adobe Acrobat.) Get Wheel pattern.
2. Use a sharp knife to cut a circular shape on top of pumpkin and remove the lid. Scoop out the insides of the pumpkin.
3. Use a pencil to draw in arched windows and to mark the position of the wheels and seat. Cut out the windows. Cut an opening for a door on the back of the pumpkin if desired.
4. Trace the wheel pattern onto tracing paper. Cut out and trace onto cardboard twice. Cut out the cardboard shapes. In a well-ventilated work area, cover the work surface with newspapers. Spray-paint the wheels gold. Let dry. Paint gold glitter onto the wheels. Let dry. Glue gold braid around each wheel. Secure each wheel in place with an upholstery tack.
5. Trim all the openings with gold braid. Hold in place with tacks.

DIY Spa Slippers

Sure you can purchase spa slippers, but why not go green can create your own spa slippers! This project is a lengthy one and you need a sturdy sewing machine that can handle the bulk of the fabric, but I guarantee you, you won't be disappointed with these slippers!

Supplies
* old flip-flops, thongs, zoris, sandals (whatever you call them)
* old cotton terry cloth towel
* 1/4 yard polyester batting
* 1/4 yard faux leather
* coordinating thread

Tools
* sewing machine
* fabric scissors
* kitchen shears
* upholstery straight pins
* water-soluble fabric marker
* pencil
* tape measure
* needle

Craft & Instructions By Crafty Nest:
1. Cut off the thong part of the flip-flop. My kitchen shears were the only scissors I had that were strong enough. With a pencil, trace each sandal onto the back of the faux leather, which will be the sole of the slipper.

2. Measure 5/8-inch around the outside and mark with dots. Connect the dots. This is the seam allowance.

3. Cut out the faux leather along the outer line.

4. Trace the leather cutout onto towel with fabric marker. Cut them out.

5. Do the same thing with the batting.

6. Measure around the outside edge to determine the length of the side pieces.

7. Measure the height of the thickest point of the sandal to determine the width of the side pieces.

8. For the side pieces, cut two strips of towel. They should be about two inches longer than the circumference of the sandal and 1-1/4 inches wider than the height of the sandal (height + 5/8-inch seam + 5/8-inch seam). I also cut the same size strips in the batting, but ended up not using them because of thickness problems. You’ll see.

9. This is where some guesswork comes in. For the top pieces, draw around the outside of the leather pattern, flaring out a bit toward the heel, which will accommodate your foot. Then draw another line 5/8 inch outside of that line (for the seam) and cut out.

10. Cut four top pieces. You can use the same pattern for all of them because the towel is reversible.

11. Cut out two pieces of batting the same size.

12. Trim off about 5/8 inch from the bottom so they’ll fit inside better.

13. All the pieces you need are now cut. (I discarded the thin strips of batting in this photo.)

14. Sew the bottom edges of the top pieces (5/8-inch seam allowance). Turn right side out and insert batting.

15. Sew the top edges together with the batting inside (1/2-inch seam allowance).

16. Sew the footbed pieces to the batting (1/2-inch seam allowance).

17. Starting at the heel, sew the thin strips of towel to the outside edge of the faux leather sole (1/2-inch seam allowance).

18. Make sure you start with the short edge folded back in the correct direction, then overlap the other short edge at the end. Hand sew the two ends together. I used a whip stitch.

19. Snip out triangles from the seam of the sole. This will help it bend correctly when it’s turned right-side-out.

20. The layers were too thick for straight pins, so I used large binder clips to attach the top piece to the foot bed. Place the sole upside down on top of the other two pieces.

21. Sew all three pieces (six layers) together in one seam (1/2-inch seam allowance)—leaving the heel open large enough to insert the flip-flop.

* My sewing machine was unable to handle the bulk of the fabric for this last seam, so I took them to European Cobblery, and Jessica sewed them on her heavy-duty machine. It cost me $28 (with a 20% off coupon).

22. Turn right side out and insert the flip-flop.

23. Hand-sew the heel portion closed. You can use a hidden stitch or whip stitch. The whip stitch is easier in this case, and it’s nearly invisible against the terry cloth anyway.

There are so many great crafting ideas online and I wish I had time to work on them all, but that's why I have this blog to share the neat crafting projects with my readers. Recently, I found this great bath and body craft for holding soap, its called "The Soap Buddy" by Instructables.

What is The Soap Buddy? The Soap Buddy by Instructables is a sleeve for you soap and it eliminates slippery bars, extra washing gadgets, and wasted soap.

Lay flat on table and make a cut 6" from the bottom straight across. This piece will be the main sleeve to hold the soap. Also make a cut 2" from the top. This piece will make the strap.

MATERIALS
-wash cloth
-cotton cord
-needle & thread
-scissors

INSTRUCTIONS
1. fold the washcloth in half, and cut it to the desired length.
2. Tape a 2 1/2-inch loop of cotton cord inside the folded cloth.
3. Stitch along the bottom and side edges, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance (make sure to catch the ends of the loop).
4. Turn the pocket right side out.
5. After each use, hang the washcloth mitt by its loop to dry.

Take Me Away: Free Bubble Bath Recipes!

Do you remember the old Calgon Take me Away Commercials from the 70's? There is always time to destress from the workday and take a nice relaxing bubble bath. We have found some Free Bubble Bath Recipes just for you! Personally, I have been so busy I have not been able to try them yet, but over the years, I have found these online recipes from a variety of online sources from unknown authors so enjoy creating your relaxing bubble bath and create that wonderful spa experience in your home.

Basic Bubble Bath Recipe
Use only 100% pure soap flakes.

Almond Oil--2 cups
Distilled Water--2 cups
Soap Flakes (or grated soap)--1 cup
Witch Hazel--2 Tbsp

Boil the spring water and melt the soap in it. In another container, mix the witch hazel and almond oil together and shake well. (If possible, do this in a blender.) Then slowly add the soap mixture to the witch hazel and oil blend and again, shake or blend well. These amounts will make a large quantity of basic bubble bath mixture to which you can add the essential oils of your choice as and when required. For each 2 tablespoons of base bubble bath, use 15 drops of essential oil and mix well. Use 1-2 teaspoons of the final product in each bath.

Easy Bubble Bath
Soap Flakes or Grated Soap--2 cups
Water--1 gallon
Glycerin--1/4 to 1/2 cup
Shampoo or Liquid Dish Soap--2 cups
Essential Oil of Choice

Mix the soap flakes, water and 2 tbsp glycerin in a pot over low heat, stirring occasionally until the soap has dissolved. (Store this liquid soap in a covered container, used as an all-purpose soap or hand soap.) In a bowl, add 2 cups of this mixture to the rest of the glycerin, shampoo and essential oil. Pour into a one quart container.

Store covered at room temperature. When you're ready to bathe, add about one cup to your tub as it's filling. Remember! Use no more than 30 drops of essential oils to 1 oz of carrier (bubble bath)! (15 drops being very safe.)

Raspberry/Vanilla Bubble Bath
8 oz. unscented liquid soap
2 oz. distilled water
8 drops vanilla fragrance oil
6 drops raspberry fragrance oil
2 drops red food coloring

Mix all and pour into a container.

Lavender Dreams Bubble Bath
1 quart water
1 bar castille soap (grated)
3 ounces glycerin
3 drops lavender fragrant or essential oil

Mix all ingredients together. Store in a container. Pour in running water.

Minty Fresh Bubble Bath
1 cup fresh or 1/4 cup dried mint (chop up finely if its fresh)
1 cup fresh bay leaves -finely chopped
1 teaspoon coconut oil
1 teaspoon of almond extract

Mix ingredients together then place in a mesh bag such as cheesecloth. Place under hot running water. Sit back & enjoy.

Cherry Berry Bubble Bath
1/2 cup unscented shampoo
3/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon salt (regular table salt is fine)
15 drops cherry fragrance oil

Pour shampoo into a bowl and add water. Stir gently until well mixed. Add salt, and stir until mixture thickens. Add cherry fragrance and place in decorative bottle. Can also be used to make a body wash!

Tropical Dream Bubble Bath
3 drops rose fragrant or essential oil
2 drop jasmine fragrant or essential oil
1 ounce glycerin
1 ounce coconut oil
1 bar castille soap (grated)
1 quart water

Mix all ingredients together. Store in a container. Pour in running water.

Creative Ways to Make a Soap Dispenser

Heather Bullard created a unique idea with using just a mason jar as a soap dispenser. If I had seen this craft sooner, I would not have went out to the store to purchase one. This craft appears to be fairly easy with just a few tools you can make this soap dispenser in no time at all. Here's the instructions on how to create your own Mason Jar Soap Dispenser:

Tools:
Old plastic soap bottle
Mason jar
2 part Epoxy
Drill
Scissors
Marker
Box Cutter

Instructions (Click for Visual Instructions):
1. Cut off the top of the soap bottle leaving the screw threading intact. Also leave a small rim just below the threads for the epoxy. Drill a hole in the mason jar lid so your bottle top will fit through it snuggly (Bullard, H., 2010).

2. Mix the epoxy according to the package directions and apply to lower rim of bottle top. This will make a water tight seal. Please excuse my hand model...he's been building a hen house (chicken mansion) for us and is a bit dirty. But that's another story for another day (Bullard, H., 2010).

3. Lastly, insert the pump through the hole and screw tightly to secure. Let it dry according to the epoxy instructions before using. If you're not worried about the seal being water tight and don't mind the pump spinning around you can completely skip the epoxy step (Bullard, H., 2010).

DIY Kitchen Lemon-Nutmeg Soap Bars

I found this great article for Lemon-Nutmeg Soap bars that I am going to add to my soap making collection.I have not uploaded all of WicksnCandlesticks soaps yet, but it is soon to come. This particular article came from Beth Taylor, so I thought I would pass on the soap article for those interested in making handmade kitchen soap.

The scent of nutmeg is used by aromatherapists to bring relaxation and calm. Used topically, nutmeg is thought to help soothe excema and dry skin, so it is a nice addition to soap.

Squeeze the juice of a fresh lemon then add water to make nine ounces. Finely grate the rind of one lemon. Melt in a cooking pot:

* 12 ounces grated soap
* 9 ounces lemon juice and water mixture.

When melted, add:

* Grated lemon rind
* 1 to 2 teaspoons freshly ground nutmeg.

Stir the nutmeg and lemon rind thoroughly into the melted soap just before pouring into molds (Taylor, B. 2010).

Candle Chandeliers

Use these quilted jam jars for holding votive candles and hang them from an outdoor fixture or arbor. Romantic light will refract candlelight from these beautiful candle chandeliers.

Items Needed:
Jam Jars
Gauge Wire
Small Crystal Pieces
Needle-nose Pliers

Candle Chandeliers Directions:
Collect enough jam jars and chandelier crystals for the project.

Wrap 20-gauge wire around the top of each jar at one of its grooves (the wire should be snug but not overly tight).

Hook a U-shaped 24-gauge wire onto the first wire, leaving a small gap so it "swings" under the jar.

Make a small crimp in the wire where the crystal will hang; attach a crystal. Use 20-gauge wire to create a hanger.

Tighten all wires by twisting them with needle-nose pliers. Place a votive candle inside the jar.

Hang jars from chains purchased at a hardware or jewelry-supply store (MS, 2010).

Terra Cotta Candle Holders

Here is an easy spring time candle craft for candle decor in your home. Use terra cotta flowerpots and create romantic candle holders for your indoor dining or outdoor dining.

Supplies:
- Terra cotta pots
- Craft paint (I used an ivory)
- Sand, gravel or floral clay to hold candles
- Floral motifs from contact paper, gift wrap, wall border, or magazines (optional)
- Glue
- Floral moss (optional)
- Taper candle

Instructions:
Using a wadded up damp paper towel, dip into your paint and dab the excess off onto another paper towel. Dab the paint over the surface of the pot until you get a sponged, washed antique look. Allow to dry.

Cut out your floral motifs and brush a thin layer of glue on the back. Place onto your pot, smooth and brush another layer over the top. Repeat until you have the design you like. Brush the entire outside of the pot with glue. (You may water it down slightly) Allow to dry. (Obviously the glue won’t be necessary if you use contact paper or stickers.)

Now fill your pot half full with clean sand or gravel, and nestle the candle into the pot, supported by the sand. You may also use floral clay to secure the candle.

Finally, use a small amount of floral moss to cover the top of the pot if desired. Always make sure you are watching these candles as they burn, and do not allow candles to come into contact with any flammable material.

A Little Sunshine Please!

Martha Stewart does it again with this beautiful candle decoration. Just add votives to this beautiful mason glass containers for warm and inviting glow to your dining table. All this craft requires is paint, votives, mason glass containers. Add some beautiful sunflowers or yellow tulips in a vase to add to the table.

Martha uses Pebeo Vitrea 160 series glass paints, which are nontoxic, permanent, dishwasher and microwave-safe (MS, 2010).

Tools and Materials
Glass container, such as a Mason jar
Rubbing alcohol (optional)
Yellow paint (1 1/2 ounces will cover 4 pint-size jars)
Paper towels or cloth
Shallow pan
Wire, crimp beans, and pliers, for hanging (optional)

Votives How-To
1. Prepare jar for painting by washing and, if necessary, wiping interior with rubbing alcohol to remove any debris or traces of oil. Pour approximately 3 to 4 tablespoons of paint into the jar. Rotate jar slowly to move paint around the interior until entire surface is coated. Tip jar on one of its sides, and hold in that position to pool excess paint in one area. Pour excess paint back into paint jar (if you're making more than one, pour remaining paint into the second jar, making sure it has been cleaned and prepared for painting).

2. Place the jar, inverted, mouth side down, on a small stack of wet paper towels or a cloth to allow any excess paint to drain. To avoid excess-paint buildup at mouth, replace wet paper towels until paint begins to set and is no longer dripping. Once paint has initially set, turn it back on its base to dry for 24 hours.

3. Once dry, place jar in shallow pan, in a 325 degree oven, and bake for 40 minutes. Turn oven off, and allow jar to cool in oven, leaving door ajar. After jar has cooled, insert a votive candle.

4. To hang the jar, cut a piece of wire 3 inches longer than the circumference of the jar. String one crimp bead onto one end of the wire. Holding it in place, thread the wire's other end through the same bead in the opposite direction so that the crimp bead has a wire end extending about 1/2 inch out of each opening. Use pliers to crimp the bead, creating a wire ring that will be placed around the jar's neck. Place the ring over the mouth, and twist loops on opposite sides of ring until it's small enough so that it won't slip off. Bend wire in half, slip one end into one loop, and use pliers to bend the tip of the end upward. Repeat for other side.

Items Needed:

* Water (Tap Water)
* Food coloring in your choice of colors to fit your wedding theme

Instructions:
Fill each of your candle holders with a little bit of water and add a drop of food coloring to each candle holder. If the food color is not dark enough, add one drop at a time until the color is achieved.

Green Your Candles!

It's almost the spring and its time to celebrate in your home with beautiful crafted candle home decor projects. Embellishing pillar candles with blades of grass highlights a plant. Place the candles on pastel saucers that set off the green grass blades, and display them on a shelf or mantel.

To make this candle craft, supplies needed are light-colored pillars, a nonflammable all-purpose glue stick, and blades of grass (we used wheat grass sprouted from seed). Apply adhesive to a single blade, and affix to candle, folding the bottom of the blade underneath. Repeat process, varying lengths and spacing to mimic natural growth and create a pleasing pattern (Stewart, M. 2010).

Musically Inspired Wrapped Candle

I found this beautiful wrapped candle craft by Inspired Ideas for the musical artist or music lover.

Instructions by Inspired Ideas:
Use a tape measure to measure the circumference of the glass candle holder. Cut a piece of sheet music long enough to wrap around the candle holder. You can make it as tall as you'd like. The light shines through the vintage paper with a nice glow so consider covering the entire candleholder. I used scallop scissors to edge the paper.

Adhere the paper to the candleholder. I ran the wrapper through the Xyron sticker maker.

Use masking tape to mark the area for a band of paint around the candle holder. Quick tip:To make the masking tape just a little less tacky, quickly press the tape to your jeans and pull off...the lint the tape collects will save your paper from tearing when you remove the paint.

Using watered down paint, carefully paint a band around, directly on the sheet music. Experiment with diluting the paint to get a nice transparent quality. The candlelight will shine through the paint too for a very nice effect. Remove masking tape and allow paint to dry.

Cut a length of paper lace according to the circumference of the candleholder. Adhere the paper lace to the column, directly over the painted area. I put the paper lace through my Xyron sticker maker...quick and easy!

Finish the candles with velvet ribbon and embellishments...pretty, pretty!

Dried Flower Candles

Embed flowers onto a candle by affixing dried flowers to the surface, then over-dipping in clear wax. This technique works especially well with interestingly shaped leaves and flat blooms.

MAKES ONE 7 X 2-INCH PILLAR

Supplies:
2 pounds kitty litter
Fresh of dried flowers, such as pansies and violets
1 Basic Recipe Molded Candle
Stick-um or other craft adhesive
1.5 pound dip-and-carve or paraffin wax

Directions:
1. If using fresh flowers, cover a cookie sheet with a layer of kitty litter and place the flowers and leaves on top. Sprinkle enough kitty litter over the flowers to completely cover. Leave to dry in a cool, dry place (where kitty can't get at them!) for at least a week. (Silicone beads work similarly, but will dry the flowers in 24 to 48 hours.)

2. Carefully remove the flowers from the litter and lay them out in a pleasing arrangement on a sheet of paper.

3. Use a dab of Stick-um to affix the flowers to the candle. Do this to each flower until the arrangement is complete, making sure the flowers remain flat against the candle.

4. In a 9-inch dipping can, set in the bottom of a double boiler over medium heat, melt the wax. Heat to 205 degrees Fahrenheit. (Be extra vigilant at these temperatures.)

5. Holding the candle by the wick, carefully dip it in the wax. Hold for 5 seconds. Remove and make sure the flowers are flat.

6. Dip again for 5 seconds. Remove and leave to dry for 2 hours. Trim the wick to 1/4 inch and you are ready to light your candle.

Lacy Candle Decor

This is a beautiful craft for a wedding or for home decor that I thought was very beautiful, so enjoy this candle craft project.

Materials
•Inexpensive Straight Cylinder vase or candle holder (can be found for $3 to $10 at craft stores like Michael’s)
•Eyelet Material or material of choice by the yard (We found ours in the fashion district of downtown LA, but there are plenty of resources online as well)
•Measuring Stick
•Spray Fabric Adhesive
•Scissors

Instructions
1. First measure the height of your glass hurricane and cut the eyelet material to the appropriate width.

2. Spray the fabric adhesive onto the hurricane holder and wrap the candle slowly with the material, being sure to smooth out any wrinkles as you apply the material.

3. Trim the material that isn’t straight or that might be overflowing at the top of the candle holder. Allow to dry for up to 24 hours prior to use.

When looking for the material for the candle holder people might prefer lace or sheer, but make sure to buy fabric by the yard, rather than trim and avoid materials with scalloped edging or a delicate trim because this allowed the candle holders to be uniform for the final product (Helmstetter, B. 2010).

Fish in a Bag Soap

This easy-to-make soap is a wonderful Handmade Holiday gift (Stewart, M., 2010).

Tools and Materials
-Clear plastic bag: 4 inches wide by 8 inches tall, and at least 1.5 millimeters thick
-Clear glycerin soap
-Heat-resistant measuring cup
-Double-boiler or microwave
-Rubbing alcohol
-Small spray bottle
-Plastic fish
-Clothespin
-Ribbon
-Gift tag

Fish in a Bag Soap Instructions:
1. Open the plastic bag and cuff the top enough so that the bag will stand on its own.

2. Place 4 ounces of solid clear glycerin soap in a heat-resistant measuring cup, and melt in a double-boiler or microwave.

3. Pour half the melted soap into the bag. Spray with alcohol until bubbles disappear. Allow to cool and harden for about 1 hour.

4. Re-melt remaining soap. Pour a small amount of melted soap on top of cooled soap in bag. Spray with alcohol. Position fish in melted soap, and let set 15 minutes to lock into place.

5. Pour the remaining soap over fish. Spray with alcohol. Gather bag above soap and pinch with clothespin. Allow soap to cool for 15 minutes.

6. Remove clothespin, and tie with a ribbon threaded with a gift tag.

Homeade Grass Soap

We used a pound of glycerin soap to make four to five bars of soap.

Tools and Materials:
•Scissors
•Wheatgrass
•Blotter paper
•Flower press
•Glycerin soap
•Sharp knife
•Glass measuring cup
•Grass fragrance
•4-inch mini loaf pan
•Spray bottle filled with
•Rubbing alcohol
•Waxed paper
•Twine

Grass Soap Instructions:
Cut a 5-inch-square section from a flat of wheatgrass. Pull out individual blades with roots attached, and lay in a single layer on a sheet of blotter paper. Top with another piece of blotter paper. Sandwich between pages of a flower press. Let dry, two to three days. Cut glycerin soap (we used clear and white) into small pieces with a sharp knife. Fill measuring cup. Microwave on medium heat until melted. If desired, add a few drops of grass fragrance.

For a bar with long blades:
Trim the dried grass to desired length, removing roots. Pour a thin layer of glycerin into a loaf pan. Lay five to seven blades on top, and let dry for 30 seconds. Spray with alcohol to eliminate bubbles, cover with more glycerin, and spray again with alcohol.

For a bar with chopped grass: Mix cut dried grass into glycerin, and pour into pan; spray with alcohol. Let harden, 2 hours. Freeze 20 minutes; release from pan. For gifts, wrap stacked bars in waxed paper, and secure with twine.

Heart Shaped Soap

Stamped soaps, inspired by candy conversation hearts, are great gifts for friends. Put in cellophane bags tied with tags; adorn with glitter(Stewart, M. 2010).

Tools and Materials
•Nonstick 9-inch square pan
•Heart-shape cookie cutter
•Glass measuring cup
•Glycerin soap
•Bench scraper
•Soap colorant or food coloring
•Spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol
•Cutting board
•Needlenose pliers
•1/8-inch metal letter stamps
•Masking tape

Heart-Shaped Soap How-To
We used a 2-inch cookie cutter (1 inch high) and 2 1/2 pounds of glycerin soap-sold at crafts stores-to make 16 hearts.

1. Depending on your equipment, yields may vary. To determine how much glycerin you'll need, fill pan with water to 1/4 inch below height of cookie cutter; pour water into measuring cup. Record amount; discard water.

2. Cut soap into small pieces with bench scraper; fill measuring cup. Microwave on medium heat until melted; stir. Add soap and heat until you've reached the water amount. Add colorant; stir. Pour liquid into pan. Spray with alcohol to eliminate bubbles.

3. Let harden at room temperature, 2 hours. Freeze 10 minutes.

4. Turn upside down onto cutting board. Create soaps with cookie cutter; pull cutter out with pliers if it sticks. Tape stamps together to form words, and imprint on soap, applying light, even pressure.

1. Punch hearts from a sheet of wax using heart-shaped craft punches.

2. While holding a single wax heart with chopsticks, heat the pillar candle and wax heart using a blow-dryer (this will soften the wax heart, causing it to adhere to the candle).

3. Repeat this process until you have attached the desired number of hearts to the candle.

Lacy Votive Candleholders

This beautiful candle craft for Valentine's Day will spruce up any room in your home! This candle craft creates sturdy candleholders from lace and it is saturated with fabric stiffener. Fitted with tea lights in glass containers, these luminarias can be positioned alone or in groups around a room or along a mantel for instant ambiance (MS, 2010).

Votive Holder How-To
Use rectangular pieces of lace in several sizes to make a variety of votive holders. The long side of the lace will determine the circumference of the finished item. We used pieces that were 5 inches wide and 14 to 21 inches long. We like guipure for this project, because it has a large and distinct motif, but any medium- to heavy-weight lace will work.

1. Cut lace into a rectangle in the desired size. Trim one of the long sides, which will be the top of the votive holder, following the lace's motif. Sew across the bottom with a loose running stitch and connect the 2 ends. Pull the thread, gathering the bottom into a tight circle, and knot. Whipstitch the short sides together.

2. Place a balloon inside the lace, and then blow it up to fit the lace's dimensions. Set the balloon upright in a paper cup so the lace form is upside down. Arrange the gathered lace to create an even bottom. Spray with fabric stiffener until saturated. Let dry.

3. Pop the balloon.

A Glowing Greeting

Spell out a glowing message of love by creating paper sleeves to fit around votive candleholders.

Instructions:

1. Construct each votive sleeve from two strips of pink card stock scored and folded into two equal sections. Leave a tab on one end for gluing or taping the pieces together neatly.
2. Trace the letters on the left side of the cardstock and heart shapes onto the right side of the card stock with pencil, then cut them out using a crafts knife. Use double-stick tape to attach a square of hot pink vellum to the cutout area to give the candlelight a soft, romantic glow.
3. To mail, tuck the candle sleeves into pockets made from pieces of white card stock that have been printed with a message, cut to fit, and sewn to the inside of the card using a simple running stitch.
4. Assemble the inner and outer pages of the card and sew them together booklet-style with a double strand of pink embroidery floss. Tie the loose ends in a bow (BHG, 2010).

Rubber Stamping with Candles

Romantic Beach and Seashell Glass Candle Ring

Surprise your husband or significant other with this beautifully created romantic beach and seashell glass candle ring for a night full of romance. Create a romantic night as if you were at the beach (Fave Crafts, 2010).

Materials:

* STYROFOAM* Brand Foam:
o Wreath, 6" x 1-1/4" x 1-1/4"
* Seashells, 2" or smaller, about nine assorted pair
* Sea glass, 1" or smaller, pale blue/green/white assortment
* Shell/Glass Rings (front, left center):
* Shell/Starfish Ring (top right):
* Shells: whole tellin or scallop, about 18; 3/4" turrids, about 50
* Votive candle
* Low-temp glue gun and glue sticks
* Thick, white craft glue
* Small starfish, five
* Optional: Matte-finish white spray paint

Steps:

Shell/Glass Rings:

1. Wash and dry shells and sea glass if needed.

2. For formal look (front), glue pairs of shells to foam wreath, opposite one another. Begin with largest shells, moving to smallest. Fill spaces between shells with sea glass.

3. For more casual, natural look (left center), glue a favorite large shell to wreath, then surround with smaller shells and sea glass. Continue until entire top of wreath is covered. Glue sea glass to inner and outer foam edges.

Shell/Starfish Ring:

1. For starfish ring (top), paint turrid shells white if desired; let dry. Glue shells around wreath edge, close together with points up; let dry.

2. Glue large shells to top of wreath, facing one direction and slightly overlapped. Glue starfish to top of shells as shown. Let dry.

Heart Vase & Candle Holder

This is a cute little heart vase and candle holder to make with your children for your home, its a family fun candle project.

Materials:

* Tissue paper in Valentine colors such as pink, white, purple or red
* Mod Podge or decoupage glue
* Foam applicator
* Clear vase, canning jar or glass baby food jar
* For candle holder you will need a tea-light

Optional: Sizzix machine with heart die cut
1) Cut out heart shapes from tissue paper. If you have a Sizzix machine with a heart die cut, this would speed up the cutting process. Otherwise, you can cut out the hearts by hand. We have provided heart templates on our printable page. Since tissue paper is so thin, you can cut multiple layers at one time.

2) If you want to make a candle holder, you will need a clean glass baby food jar. For a vase, you can choose a plain clear vase or a canning jar. No matter which type of vase or candleholder you decide to make, all the crafting steps are the same.

3) Using a sponge applicator, spread a layer of Mod Podge (or decoupage glue) over a small area of the outside of your jar/vase. Lay tissue paper hearts on top of the glue. Overlap the hearts as you go. It may be necessary to add some Mod Podge to the back of some of the hearts as you over lap them. Continue adding Mod Podge and tissue paper hearts until the outside of the vase/jar is covered.

4) Spread a layer of Mod Podge over the hearts using the sponge applicator.

Ideas:
While the Mod Podge/glue is still wet, sprinkle it with crystal glitter.
When making one of the vases, tie a piece of ribbon (approximately 24" long) around the neck of the vase.
Using glitter glue, outline a few of the hearts on your vase. This craft is created by the Craft Elf (Craft Elf, 2010).

Punched Tin Candleholders for Christmas

I found this unique candleholder craft for candle tins. I love it because they reflect a lot of light and I love candle light and beautiful decorations at Christmas.

To make these punched tin candleholders you will need:
-Sheet tin or copper, or even bronze or the rusted tin if you prefer.(36 gauge is about the best)
-a sharp pencil
-ruler
-round cookie cutter or lid to something
-an awl or an ice pick
-an old magazine
-small pointy scissors such as thread snippers
-brass paper fasteners

Cut a rectangle of the metal that is about 11x 7 in size and use a sharp pencil and ruler to draw a line across the length of it, dividing it in half. Then draw parallel lines making a sort of lattice patern, and use a round coin, lid or cookie cutter to draw circles between the lines and all along the top and bottom edges.
You will want to begin punching holes now, but before you do, take a magazine or something similar and place it beneath your work to help you. The newspapers or magazine will have some give to it, but will also protect your work surface and prevent your work from slipping(How Did I Do It, 2009).

If you like, you may also wear protective gloves. The edges of the candleholders will be sharp. I generally sand them lightly with an emery board or fine sandpaper to blunt the edges of the metal(How Did I Do It, 2009).

Taking the awl or ice pick, begin to punch holes that you space regularly along the lines you drew, so that you are making a design with the holes. Punch a single hole in the center of each of the circles, and the middle of each triangle as you see in the photo to your right.. Keep the holes in regular spacing so that the design looks even. It will be easier to do this if you punch a hole about every inch or half inch and then fill in between them with an even number of holes. I found this helped me keep the number of holes even(How Did I Do It, 2009).

Then cut very carefully along the top edge and around your circles with scissors and leave a thin edge just outside the circles you punched around. It will also be helpful to blunt these edges as well or, if you like, take some needle nose pliers and very carefully bend down the edges of the design so that the edges are not sharp.
Very carefully so that you don’t crease the candle holder, bend it around in a circle and overlap the ends slightly. Make three marks, top, middle and bottom, where they overlap and punch holes through both layers. Push a paper fastener through and open it on the inside to hold the candle holders in a tube(How Did I Do It, 2009).

Settle them down onto a glass plate, such as a round candle holder that is slightly larger in diameter, or on an oven safe saucer. As your candle burns down, the light from the holes will shine through and give a very elegant and decorative effect.
I’ve also done these as lamp shades or as shades for a chandelier. They afford a rather old world, country decorating look to any lighting effect (How Did I Do It, 2009).

Outdoor Luminaries Decor Project

Luminaries: A walkway dotted with these luminarias (luminaries) warmly ushers guests into your home's embrace. Line a path with luminarias or place one on each side of your front door.

What You Need:

* Small plastic bucket, such as gallon ice cream bucket

* Small evergreen branches

Instructions:

1. Line sides and bottom of bucket with greens and fruit. Place plastic cup in middle so top of cup is level with top of bucket (you may need to add extra branches beneath the cup). Continue filling in fruit and greens between cup and sides of bucket.

2. Place two pieces of duct tape at right angles across bucket opening to keep cup from floating around.

3. Fill area between bucket and cup with water.

4. Put bucket in freezer or outside until frozen. It will take 8 to 24 hours to freeze. To unmold, set bucket in sink filled with hot water to loosen. Remove duct tape and slide out ice luminaria (luminary). Cup will remain inside ice.

5. Set luminaria (luminaries) outside. Place candle inside cup and light. (Use small votive candles to keep flame protected from the wind.)

6. When luminarias (luminaries) have finally melted, pick up the cups.

Frozen in buckets with citrus slices, the luminarias (luminaries) will last as long as the weather is cold.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service Tradition

The church has beautiful Christmas décor, the ambiance from the candlelight makes the night is magical for me, and I hold this time of year dear to my heart. Beautiful Christmas Carols are sung and its truly a night to fellowship with family and friends to celebrate our Saviors birth. Christmas Candle Jars

While melting and pouring wax is best left to adults, the creative parts of this candle-making project (choosing the perfect crayon to color the wax and decorating the glass holder with beads) are meant for kids.

Materials

* Large saucepan
* Metal canning jar lid rim
* Coffee can
* Paraffin wax
* Crayons
* Paint stirrer
* Candlesticks (one for each jar)
* Thick widemouth glass jars
* Metal tongs
* Plastic beads
* Tacky glue

Instructions

1. Set up a double boiler to melt the paraffin. Fill the bottom of the saucepan with 4 to 5 inches of water and drop in the canning jar lid rim. Then pack chunks of paraffin into the coffee can, setting it on the jar rim so that it doesn't directly touch the bottom of the pot.

2. Melt the wax over medium-high heat, carefully adding more chunks until the can is about two-thirds filled. To color the melted wax, break half of a peeled crayon into pieces. Add them to the wax and slowly mix with a paint stirrer, then turn off the heat and let the paraffin cool for about 10 minutes (this will help minimize shrinkage when the wax hardens).

3. Using a sharp knife, cut the candlesticks 1/2 inch shorter than the jar heights (adults only). Now, heat the jars by running warm water on the outsides but not the insides (this will help prevent cracking when you pour in the hot wax).

4. With metal tongs, dip the bottom of each candlestick into the melted wax and stick it to the inner jar bottom. When the candlestick ends have hardened enough to hold, carefully pour enough wax into the jars to cover the candlestick tops but not the wicks.

5. Once the candles cool completely, your kids can glue beads to the outside of the jar, arranging them in a border around the rim, perhaps, or creating a multicolor pattern all the way around (Disney Family Fun, 2009).

Birch Log Candles

Working From Your Own Mold

1. Create the Mold
For a birch-log candle mold, use a 2-inch screw to secure a strip of wood to the top of a small log. Wood strip should be long enough to lie flat across a container (a mailing tube, a bucket, or any plastic container) that's a few inches wider than the log on all sides. Cover the log with two coats of Butcher's wax (available at hardware stores) to prevent the bark from peeling off and sticking to the mold. Then spray the log and the inside of the mailing tube with mold release, and let it dry. In a clean plastic container, mix the rubber-mold compound according to the manufacturer's instructions. Center the log inside the mailing tube. Slowly pour the compound into the tube around the log, until it's even with (but doesn't cover) the top of the log. If your log starts to float, weigh it down with a can. Let the compound cure overnight. This same procedure can be used to make molds of pumpkins and gourds -- just attach the strip of wood to the bottom of the fruit. Because the surface will be smoother than that of the log, it's not necessary to coat it in Butcher's wax.

2. Remove Casting
To remove the mold, cut away the container with a craft knife. Then gently make two cuts (through to the log) along opposite sides of the rubber mold, down to about an inch from the bottom. As you carefully pull apart the two sides, you may need to cut more deeply. Remove the object from the mold, and run hot water through the mold to rinse out any loose pieces of bark. To make the candle, follow the instructions under "Working From a Pre-Existing Mold."

3. Paint the Candle
For the log, mix ivory-colored acrylic paint with candle-painting medium according to the manufacturer's instructions. Using a small paintbrush, coat the log, and let it dry. With a stocking, gently rub the surface to remove paint and create a barklike texture. To paint a pumpkin stem, mix brown paint with candle-painting medium, and apply with a small paintbrush.

Bright Winter Blooms

Take a white flower and a single taper candle and put a drop of wax at the bottom of a cylindrical vase so it can secure the candle. Of course, this is before you add water.
